Restore Energy, Restore Balance
Yoga is an ancient form of exercise originating from India that focuses on physical, mental and spiritual practices. There are many styles and practices of yoga, from 'Yin' and restorative to more vigorous 'Yang' practices such as flowing dynamic yoga.
Ancient philosophy tells us we need a balance of Yin and Yang to keep our bodies healthy but in Western society many people experience too much 'Yang' - the 'energy of doing', and not even ‘Yin’– ‘the energy of being’. If a person is already experiencing high levels of stress, disease or illness completing vigorous exercise will just add to the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol which suppress the immune system and if not managed appropriately can overload the system leading to burnout, adrenal fatigue and disease. Eastern philosophy teaches that our body is made up of energy lines known as meridian lines that run through the body carrying our 'chi’ or ‘prana’ (life energy). At times this energy can become stuck due to life experiences, stress, trauma and illness. Stress can literally become locked in the body. A Yin practice, where poses are held for 5 -7mins helps reach deep into the muscle and fascia lines to release tension so that life energy can flow more freely.
It's a grounded meditative practice that helps to boost and rejuvenate the immune system as well as calm the mind. In this way Yin Yoga can be seen as a form of healing to help rebalance the whole nervous system and as such forms a part of a full health and wellness journey.

More about your instructor, Maria Craven
“I was drawn to Yoga and Pilates to help relieve stress and tension in my body, especially my lower back. With regular practice my body became stronger and pain in my lower back eased. I previously worked for social services, desk bound for many hours and so I am passionate about correcting poor postural habits which can lead to pain and injury. I'm a firm advocate of working safely with clients to ensure the correct muscles are being recruited in each exercise. In today's fast paced society, I feel many people are over stressing their bodies with vigorous exercise which may do more harm than good. I personally find Yoga and Pilates a complete discipline to safely stretch and strengthen the body from the inside out”.
