What is Reiki?
Reiki is a soft, gentle, non-invasive hands-on healing technique that uses spiritual energy to treat physical, mental and emotional manifestations without using any kind of pressure, manipulation or touch, if you would prefer not to be touched. Reiki is a holistic system for balancing, healing and harmonising all aspects of both the physical and energetic bodies. Reiki is also used to bring about personal and spiritual growth and awareness.
Where does the name Reiki come from?
Reiki is a Japanese word (pronounced Ray Kee). It is said to translate as ‘universal life force energy’, however a more accurate translation is ‘spiritual energy’. Please note that you don’t need to consider yourself to be spiritual to benefit from Reiki, in fact about two thirds of my clients would not refer to themselves this way.
The word Reiki itself is divided into two elements:
Rei which is translated as ‘sacred’, ‘soul’, ‘spirit’, ‘wisdom and knowledge of all the Universe’ or ‘atmosphere of the Divine’. Essentially it is the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and function of the Universe. It is the all-knowing that understands the cause of all problems, all difficulties and knows how to heal them. The name for this is whichever you feel comfortable with - Source, The Creator, The Divine, The Universe, All That Is.
Ki is translated as the life force energy which flows through every living being – human, animal, plant – and is present in some form in everything around us. Conceptually it embodies that we are all just energy and vibration. Everything around us is , from the trees in your garden to the coffee table in your front room.
What are Reiki’s origins?
Reiki is spiritual energy, direct from Source, and has been with us since the Universe as we know it was created. There are, however, two forms of Reiki used today; Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki.
In Japan, Reiki is any kind of healing using spiritual energy. In the West, it is the healing practice developed by a Japanese Buddhist Priest, Dr Mikao Usui in the 1920s, called Usui Reiki Ryoho, which means Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method. It is this method that is now widely known as Reiki.
The story of how Mikao Usui (a scholar who taught in a Christian seminary) came across Reiki is this. One day a student challenged him by asking him if he believed in the stories the bible told of Jesus’ healing abilities, and if so, when were they to be taught to heal? As Mikao was a man of honour, it is said that upon realising he could not teach his students this, he dedicated the rest of his life to finding out just how Jesus and The Buddha had been able to work such wonders of healing. He travelled far and wide before ending up in a Buddhist monastery where he was told to meditate to find the answers he was seeking. He decided to begin a 21-day fasting retreat at the top of a treacherous mountain top. It was there cold, weak and close to death that he saw the great light above him and received his ‘spiritual empowerment’ (empower means to ‘give’ or enable’, and spiritual empowerment means to ‘transfer wisdom, insight and ability’ through an inpouring of spiritual energy). In his excitement to descend the mountain, he cut his foot. When holding it in his hands, the bleeding stopped, and the pain disappeared. And there, Reiki, as we know it now, was born.
How long does a Reiki session last?
Reiki sessions can vary in length. If we are working with a disease, illness, persistent pain or life block, I will inform you in advance of how many sessions are needed to heal you. Each session will last 2-3 hours, including time for us to talk about the treatment, what came up, what was released and expectations during the week in between treatments. We will also discuss different Reiki tools for you to use during this time to allow you to process the emotional energy being released. If you are attending for relaxation, an energy boost or any other single appointment treatment, the session will last one hour.
How do I prepare for a Reiki session?
All I ask you to do is not have taken any stimulants or alcohol, wear comfortable clothing and be friendly and relaxed. The more relaxed your energy is when we start your Reiki session, the less time the energy has to work to calm you and so the more time is spent on your healing, relaxing and rejuvenation.
How much does Reiki cost?
If you are taking more than one session, to heal an illness such as Depression, Anxiety or Chronic Disease, Reiki session fees are £150 for the first and last sessions and £95 for all sessions in between. First and last sessions cost more as I do a full reading of your energy, pull together a toolkit, make suggestions such as nutritional ones, have a one hour chat to go through the energy scan in detail, and at the end of our journey together I perform a sign off energy scan and devise a sign off pack for you.
For a one-hour session, the cost is £65.
