Reiki and the Science of Energy Medicine
The scientific view of energy medicine has swung from ridicule to respect over recent years and is one of the most fascinating and significant scientific stories of our time.
We all know that science can get it wrong, the world was flat once, matter was all there was, and space was empty space. However, biology and medical science are catching up with their empirical proof that we are all energy, that disease is energy and that our thoughts and beliefs and environment can affect that energy. It is now accepted that everything gives off a specific frequency and vibration. It has been discovered that all tissues and organs produce distinct magnetic pulsations, known as biomagnetic fields. The traditional electrical recordings, such as the ECG are now being complemented by biomagnetic recordings called magneto cardiograms or MCG's. It has also been discovered that mapping the magnetic fields in the space around the body often provides a more accurate indication of physiology and pathology than traditional electrical measurements.
Reiki, disease and energy
These discoveries are not new. Harold Saxon Burr first suggested that disease could be detected in the energy field of the body, before physical symptoms appeared, in the 1920s. He was convinced that disease could be prevented by altering the energy field (now known as the biofield). While ahead of his time, his discoveries are now being confirmed in medical research labs around the world. Scientists are mapping how diseases alter biomagnetic fields around the body or applying pulsating magnetic fields to stimulate healing - in much the same way energy healers do with their hands.
Reiki and biofields
In 1994 a panel of scientists at the National Institute of Health chose the word "biofield" to describe the field of energy and information that surrounds and penetrates the human body. The biofield is composed of both measurable electromagnetic energy and hypothetical subtle energy, or chi. This structure is also referred to as the "human energy field". This energetic field is like a superhighway that allows the DNA in our cells to communicate faster than light and maintain a coherent, holistic intelligence in the organism. The biofield comprises of multiple frequencies and information working across our very complex being - the combination of which is up to 22 vibratory states, interconnected with up to 14 strands of DNA, all of which are based on light energy.
"The field is the only reality" - Einstein.
How does Reiki relate to this?
Energy medicine regards the body as primary fields of information that can be shifted by various therapeutics, such as Reiki, that change the biofield, thus moving the health of the body. This is possible because atoms are not physical; they are little energy vortices. Every atom is a vibrational field. The implication of this in allopathic medicine is that when looking at the body through relatively new tech such as PET scans and MRI scans we are looking at the energy profiles of our body, not the physical expression of it. This has significance for healing because in quantum physics that energy can be adjusted by other energy rather than chemistry and research has now revealed that energy information signals are 100x more efficient in controlling our biology than our chemical signals.
Reiki and healing hands
Quantum physics has given us new insights into why and how many energy medicine modalities work so intensely and powerfully. Scientists around the world have been studying energy healers to try to isolate what that energy is that they send. With an increase in electrical energy, there is a surge in voltage. There's also a surge of magnetic energy, and there's a massive surge in biophoton emissions - the current of light emitted from the body.
In the early 1980s, Dr John Zimmerman began studies on therapeutic touch, or TT, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He discovered that a large pulsating biomagnetic field emanated from the hands of a TT practitioner. The frequency of the pulsations is not steady but sweeps up and down ranging from 0.3 to 30 Hz (cycles per second), with most of the activity in the range of 7-8 Hz.
Scientific studies of the frequencies necessary for healing indicate that they naturally sweep back and forth through the full range of therapeutic frequencies, thus being able to stimulate healing in any part of the body. The average Hz at which a healer's hands pulsate is also significant as it is the same frequency as the human brain when in Alpha Brain Wave, and the Schumann Resonance, which is the frequency of Earth. This is significant because researchers recently tried to replicate this study and found that there were no real changes in the pulsations from the healer's hands. Still, they had blocked the Schumann Resonance from the study, the core frequency at which they were shown to pulsate.
The graph above, taken from Zimmerman's study, shows nerve regeneration at 2Hz, bone growth at 7Hz, ligament healing at 10Hz and capillary formation at 15Hz. The graph showed these frequencies to match those independently discovered as the frequencies needed to heal these elements by medical researchers previously.
In 1992, Seto and colleagues in Japan studied practitioners of various martial arts and other healing methods. They found the "Qi emission" from the hands to be so strong that they can be detected with a simple magnetometer. Several studies of QiGong practitioners have extended these studies to the sound, light, and thermal fields emitted by healers. As in Zimmerman's finding, they have all found that the pulsation frequency varies from moment to moment. Moreover, medical researchers developing pulsating magnetic field therapies are finding that these same frequencies are effective for kick-starting healing in a variety of soft and hard tissues. Specific frequencies stimulate the growth of nerves, bones, skin, capillaries, and ligaments. Thanks to all of this, academic medicine are now beginning to accept Reiki as a logical and beneficial therapy.
Reiki - specific studies
Hospital patients receiving Reiki
Finding gold-standard, double-blind, randomised Reiki studies was not easy. Most studies seem to want to prove Reiki does not work, and so they were set up under weak conditions, were poorly designed and offered no stability in their hypothesis. However, with upwards of 80 hospitals in the US now offering Reiki to patients, these double-blind studies are becoming more prevalent, and they are proving that Reiki passes with flying colours when it comes to the treatment of:
- Alzheimer's & Dementia
- Pain Control
- Pre & Post Op Care
- Depression & Stress
Giving Reiki to cells in a lab
Dr Beverly Rubik is a PhD in Biophysics and a pioneer of Biofield Science. She has conducted multiple studies, and had over 60 papers published, all looking at the biofield and energy medicine. A particularly interesting study was on the effects of Reiki on subcultures in the lab. Essentially she sent Reiki to non-damaged and damaged bacterial organisms (damaged by antibiotics or temperature shocks). Repeatedly beneficial results were recorded. When healers placed their hands around the cells, the cells recovered. Why I find this a particularly interesting study is because it shows that the power of energy healing goes beyond the placebo effect. This indicates that the cells in our bodies respond to energy healing, not just our minds, that the energy works on levels of our being.
A double-blind study conducted by psychiatrist Dr Elisabeth Targ created a study of aids patients in the early 1980s. This randomised blind study looked at the effect of distance healing in a population with advanced aids. None of the healers met their clients, and all treatments were performed via distance healing. All the healers received ahead of treatment was a photo of the client, a T cell count and their name. The group was divided in half, with half receiving healing, half not. By the end of the study, Targ, a sceptic by all accounts, had to conclude that the patients who were given healing were better in every way.
By the end of the study, 40% of patients who did not receive healing had died. All of the patients who had received healing were not only alive but healthier in every regard. They had more prolonged survival, fewer side effects and fewer additional illnesses.
I had never had Reiki before but decided to try it after having tried medications and counselling for my depression and anxiety. After only a few sessions with Kerry I am amazed at how much my depression has lifted and I am no longer held back by anxiety. I would definitely recommend Reiki with Kerry to anyone.Sue
I am amazed at how much better I feel, a lifetime of depression is gone, anxiety and fear a thing of the past, and as a truly amazing side effect the physical pain and discomfort I was in is also completely gone - no more neck brace! I would definitely recommend Reiki and Enlightened Life to anyone, it has given me my life backShelagh
